Scholarly Communication Support: Planning, Conducting, Disseminating, Promoting, & Assessing Research

This guide will acquaint researchers with knowledge and tools to assist in planning, conducting, disseminating, promoting, and assessing research.

Dissertation to Publication

Making the transition from writing a dissertation to publishing scholarly articles based on your research can take some thought.
The resources below will provide general guidance to help you navigate this transition and strategize about achieving publications from your dissertation.

Keep in mind that many aspects of audience, purpose, and writing style differ between dissertations and journal articles. You will likely not be able to just copy and paste whole pages of work, but will need careful thought, cutting of excess material, and revising of remaining content to convert a dissertation into a publishable journal article.

When you have decided what journal you would like to submit to, try to verify the publisher's policies concerning publication of thesis/dissertation content; this resource from MIT can help:

In the cover letter with your article submission, be transparent with the journal editor about the following facts, assuming they are all true in your context:

  • the work is based on your dissertation;
  • your university required your thesis to be shared publicly (unless you had an embargo); and
  • you have not assigned copyright or an exclusive license to your university or anyone else and thus still have the right to publish your work (unless you have already published some/all of the work).
