Individual journal subscriptions vs publisher package subscriptions vs aggregator journal packages:
EBSCO is our major vendor for our individual journal subscriptions. There are several types of journal subscriptions:
Publisher packages-- usually a large number of journals from the same publisher. We usually have a license for these packages to specify the titles, dates of coverage, perpetual access, etc. Some of these are handled through consortia to get cheaper pricing.
Aggregator journal packages--usually a large number of journals from different publishers. The aggregator controls which titles are in the package and titles may be added or removed as the aggregator or publishers within the packages decide. These are treated as databases by NGL. This categorization developed as a result of how IPEDS and the Academic Library Survey treated these types of resources. (These types of resources often started out as indexing and abstracting services and then full text of the journals were added.)
