This research project aims to create an international news guide designed to help students at Sam Houston State University access reliable news sources for countries that could be underrepresented in mainstream U.S. media. The guide focuses on nations across Latin America, the Caribbean, and parts of Africa, offering a brief overview of their media environments and highlighting vetted outlets for student use.
In the Caribbean Islands, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic, news coverage often centers around political instability, economic challenges, and regional migration. Jamaica and the OECS (Organization of Eastern Caribbean States) focus on governance, crime, tourism, and climate-related issues. Cuba presents unique challenges due to state-controlled media.
In Central America, Guatemala, Honduras, and Paraguay deal with corruption, government tensions, and security concerns. Colombia continues to navigate post-conflict developments, while Uruguay maintains a relatively stable press environment with a focus on social policy. Ecuador and Bolivia have diverse media landscapes that are shaped by political forces, and Chile has seen renewed political activism and social reform debates.
Argentina offers a wide range of news sources, even if polarization in media coverage is notable. In Nigeria, the media covers a complex mix of politics, security, and development issues across regions with varying press freedoms.
The primary goal of this project is to identify and compile reliable news sources from these countries to support SHSU students in conducting informed international research. Each source is evaluated for credibility, accessibility, and consistency, providing a practical tool for academic work in global studies, journalism, political science, and related fields.
