Mexico is a federal republic with a presidential system of government. It is the southernmost country in North America and third largest country in Latin America. Claudia Sheinbaum is the current and first female president, elected in October of 2024. The Mexican government operates within the framework of a federal presidential representative democratic republic whose government is based on a multi-party congressional system, where the President of Mexico is both head of state and head of government.
Mexico is ranked #121 on the 2024 RSF Index. It has risen from the #128 spot in 2023. Mexico is currently emerging from its worst economic crisis and entering a period of transition with a new president.
