Political Climate and Media Biases

Uruguay has a stable and pluralistic media environment, ranking #52 in the 2024 Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index, a decline from 44th in 2022. While freedom of expression is constitutionally protected, media ownership is concentrated among a few powerful families and corporations like Villar/De Feo (Canal 10) and Romay (Canal 4). The editorial landscape features diverse political perspectives, from independent outlets like La Diaria to conservative ones like El País. However, legacy media often promotes business-friendly narratives.
