General Country Overview

Guatemala declared its independence on September 15, 1821, from Spain. The capital is Guatemala City, and the official language is Spanish. With a population of approximately 18 million, the currency is the Guatemalan quetzal (GTQ). Located in Central America, Guatemala is known for its rich Mayan history and archaeological sites.​

During the Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996), at least 342 journalists were killed and 126 journalists were “disappeared” or illegally detained. When the peace treaty was signed in 1996, journalists and government relations had improved significantly, though targeted attacks continued via organized crime. Private publishers dominate Guatemala’s media. Four national TV channels share one owner.
