If you have not already, please register for ScHARe You must register for ScHARe to access the resources listed below. To register for ScHARe, please use a Gmail account or another email account associated with a Google identity. If you need help, please read the ScHARe registration walkthrough or email schare@mail.nih.gov.

ScHARe is powered by the Terra research collaboration platform. Instructional notebooks on the ScHARe Terra Workspace  provide step-by-step instructions on:

  • How to properly configure your Terra account and cloud environment.
  • How to access, plot, and save data from datasets hosted by ScHARe, available on ScHARe through the Google Cloud Public Datasets Program, or stored locally on your computer.
  • How to use Jupyter Notebooks to run analyses and combine data across available datasets.
  • How to share analyses and results with your collaborators.

After registering for ScHARe , you can access these instructional notebooks through the Analyses tab  in the ScHARe Terra Workspace .

Additional Data Sources

Data.gov https://data.gov/
The home of the U.S. government's open data. With nearly 300,000 datasets available, Data.gov can be used to explore datasets covering a wide variety of topics. You don't even need to create an account to download a dataset. Datasets are well documented and relatively easy to search for as well.

DataHub
Data categorize by collection, primarily economic and financial data

FiveThirtyEight https://data.fivethirtyeight.com/
Limited in scope, data used in reporting on politics, sports, economics, and culture.

Google Dataset Search
Limiting a Google search to data only will provide aggregated results from across disciplines/the web. Results (usually) include a summary of what the data is, where it is from, and last update

Google Cloud BigQuery public data sets https://cloud.google.com/bigquery/public-data/
More complicated, and not all free – although COVID-19 data is free. Similar to AoU, you pay only for the queries that you perform on the data. The first 1 TB per month is free, subject to query pricing details.

Great for teaching (WIDE range of random datasets): kaggle https://www.kaggle.com/datasets

NASA https://data.nasa.gov/ A catalog of publicly available NASA datasets

GitHub list of Awesome Public Datasets https://github.com/awesomedata/awesome-public-datasets

Advanced: Hugging Face https://huggingface.co/datasets; Pandas DataReader https://pandas-datareader.readthedocs.io/en/latest/index.html financial data

More, from Open Data Library alternatives (https://opendatalibrary.com/details)

  • DataCite Search: Search engine for Research outputs of DataCite Members

  • DataOne Data Catalog: Search all datasets from organisations that use DataOne repositories, mostly includes universities and research organisations

  • Open Data Network: Aggregates the data from Socrata data portals, mainly consisting of data from government bodies

  • PANGAEA: Data for earth and environmental sciences

  • data.europa.eu: Portal that aggregates government data from European countries

  • Figshare: Aggregates the research data from universities that use Figshare
