All of Us Research Program

This guide provides information about the All of Us Research Program

Researcher Workbench

The Researcher Workbench is the cloud-based platform used to access the registered and controlled tiers of the All of Us dataset. By creating workspaces within the Researcher Workbench, researchers are able to access, store and analyze data for specific research projects. Its powerful tools, including an integrated, cloud based Jupyter Notebook environment, support data analysis and collaboration.

How to access

Because SHSU has a Data Use and Registration Agreement with the All of Us Research Program, SHSU faculty, students and staff can register for access to the Registered and Controlled tiers of data.

STEPS TO REGISTER
  • Apply for Researcher Workbench access
  • A login.gov account is also required
  • Complete the All of us Research Training (annually); Controlled Tier access requires an additional online training module
  • Sign the User Code of Conduct (two if registering for Controlled Tier access)

Access Tiers

All of Us data are curated into research datasets with tiered access through the Public, Registered, and Controlled Tiers. SHSU researchers can register for full access, by completing the required online training and a Data User Code of Conduct.

  • Public Tier: Everyone has access to the data in the Public Tier dataset through the Data Snapshots and Data Browser.
  • Registered Tier: The Registered Tier curated dataset contains individual-level data from electronic health records, survey answers, and physical measurements taken at the time of participant enrollment.
  • Controlled Tier: This more expansive dataset allows researchers access to all of the tools from the Registered Tier plus genomic data and more granular participant demographic data. Additional differences are expanded demographics, responses to entire COPE survey, COVID-19 EHR data, and unshifted event dates.

Tools & Resources

The Research Hub features several tools to support data analysis and collaborative research:

  • Workspace: A workspace is the place to store and analyze data for a specific project. Each Workspace has a dedicated space for file storage that can be shared with other users, allowing view-only or edit access.
  • Cohort Builder: Within the workspace, the Cohort Builder’s guided user interface allows researchers to create, review, and annotate cohorts through a user-friendly point-and-click interface.
  • Data Set Selector: The Data Set Selector provides users with the ability to select specific medical concepts and variables to build a data set for analysis.
  • Notebooks: Through the built-in application Jupyter Notebook, users can perform comprehensive analyses on cohorts and data sets using programming languages R or Python. Teams of researchers with various areas of expertise can work together on data cleaning and transformation, statistical modeling, machine learning, and more (see costs).
  • The Survey Explorer is a tool that allows you to browse the questions that the All of Us Program surveys ask and to see the source information for each of these questions.
