Generative AI (Artificial Intelligence) in Higher Education

This guide collects resources on artificial intelligence (AI), especially generative AI, in higher education to benefit students, faculty, and staff at SHSU.

Origin of This Guide

This resource guide arose out of an ad hoc group organized by PACE (Professional and Academic Center for Excellence) in Feb 2023 to help launch the campus conversation around AI generative tools such as ChatGPT.

We hope that this guide will serve as a dynamic, living tool for everyone across campus, for as long as it remains helpful.

What is "Artificial Intelligence"?

"Artificial intelligence is the science of making machines that can think like humans. It can do things that are considered 'smart.'"
- Artificial Intelligence, In Simple Terms

Large Language Models (LLMs)

A.I. Image Generators

A.I. Text Generators, Such as ChatGPT, Bard, and Claude

"Because natural language is used both when engaging with ChatGPT and when it generates answers, we are more inclined to personify the software. ...But the first component of AI Literacy is knowing that large language models like ChatGPT cannot and do not think."
- Emily Zerrenner, 21 July 2023

"ChatGPT can generate a sequence of words – 'language' – that, based on statistics, has a pretty good chance of being language that makes sense....A friend refers to it as a really advanced autocomplete."
- Sara Brumfield, "From the Page" [blog]
