Ordering and Hosting - Kanopy

Kanopy

Note: Kanopy is a hosting service for individually purchased streaming videos.
Typically these are videos we purchase from smaller independent companies that do not have the ability to host videos
(especially being able to restrict access to the videos per license agreements to only authorized patrons).

  • When Acquisitions gets the film file from a vendor, we need to save it on the T drive\NGL\Streaming Video.  That way the library has a permanent copy, and the library IT person (Sean Pless) and/or Systems Librarian (Linda Meyer) can get to it to,  convert it if necessary, and then upload to Kanopy.

Kanopy Information:

Hosting

If we had a license for streaming a film, but the distributor/copyright holder did not provide hosting, then Kanopy would host the streaming video on their site for $39.00 per year.  So, the cost would be $39.00/ film / year.  The streaming version would have to conform to their platform requirements.

They use IP address authentication using EZ Proxy to limit access to only authorized users.

If we have a DVD in our collection and have received permission to stream the contents, Kanopy will provide a procedure and link to a program that will allow us to convert the DVD to streaming file that conforms to their system requirements.

There is no set up charge.  The only charges are the $39.00/film.

Unlimited simultaneous users

Ann has looked over the license (they emailed it to me right away).  There were some things that would have to be changed (standard things that have to be changed with many licenses).  I’m going to give it to Scott V. next to see if he sees anything else.

Kanopy Catalog

Kanopy has a catalog of over 20,000 films they are authorized to license for streaming.  If we want to license one of the films they license and put it in the catalog, the charge is $150.00/film/year or $350.00/film/3 years.

They have collections, like the Early Cultures Collection, the German Collection, Ethical and Legal Issues Collection, etc.  If we were to license a collection, the cost would go down to $65.00 x the number of films in the collection.

If we purchase licensing for a film, it would be available to our patrons within about 24 hours, sometimes same day.

No set up charge.

Unlimited simultaneous users.

Complementary Search Service

If we’re unable to locate the copyright holder/distributor of a film we want to license for the library, they will search for us.  The only charge is if they find and acquire the license, we would be charged the $150.00/year.
