We get it: Life still happens when you're in college. You're not just a college student; you're someone's child, someone's friend, someone's employee (or employer!), someone's partner, and maybe even someone's parent or caretaker.
The Newton Gresham Library's (NGL) mission statement "envisions a library that supports and enhances the development of critically thinking, educated, and informed lifelong learners." And we want to support ALL learners, not just those who fit the stereotype of the "traditional" college student.
National Public Radio (NPR) reported in 2019 that one in five undergraduates in America are raising children while attending college. These student parents often have better grades and higher GPAs than their classmates, yet they are less likely to graduate because other life factors get in the way. (source)
At NGL, we want to do our part to ensure that student parents at SHSU have the best possible odds of graduating. To that end, we provide an array of resources and services to support student-parents while they study and learn in the library.
If you have suggestions for additional ways that the library could support you in your journey as a student parent, we want to hear from you.
