Family-Friendly Amenities at NGL

This guide describes spaces and services to accommodate student parents and their children in the library building.

Children's & Juvenile Lit Collection Location

The majority of the Children's & Juvenile Literature Collection is located on the 3rd floor of the Newton Gresham Library, on the East side of the main staircase immediately adjacent to the Instructional Materials and K-12 Textbook Collections.

There is also a carpeted child-friendly reading area with soft seating next to the Picture Book section.

  • Fiction
Call Number Structure:  LS ...  followed by initial letter of author's last name  (ex: LS .A...)
Fiction is the first section in the collection when approaching from the main stairwell.  Fiction titles are shelved by author's last name, with "LS" as the prefix.  Reading and interest levels in this section range from 2nd grade through young adult.
  • NonFiction / Informational Texts
Call Number Structure:  LS ... followed by the Dewey subject classification  (EX: LS 004 ...)
Informational titles follow the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), mirroring what a child would see in their school library, and are located between children's Fiction and Picture Books.
  • Picture Books
Call Number Structure:  LSPB .A...  or  LSPB 004... (see above)
Picture books, both fictional and informational, reside in the two ranges (rows) of short shelving along the windows.  The PB collection includes books suitable for lap-readers (including board books) through 2nd grade.
