General Information - Standing Orders

An Overview and Explanation of Standing Orders

"standing order (STO):   An order placed by a library with a publisher, jobber, or dealer to supply each volume or part of a specific title or type of publication as published, until further notice. Unlike subscriptions, which must be paid in advance, standing orders are billed as each volume is shipped. Sometimes used synonymously with continuation order.

continuation order:   An order placed by a library with a publisher or vendor to automatically supply until further notice each succeeding issue, volume, or part of a serial or series as published. If a continuation order does not specify a maximum price, it is assumed that the item may be shipped regardless of price. Some publishers offer a discount on continuation orders (usually 5 to 10 percent). Annuals (example: Literary Market Place) and reference serials are often purchased in this way. A special order record is created and maintained to track receipt of individual items. Sometimes used synonymously with standing order "

"Standing orders (an open order for all titles fitting a particular category) are best for items that are serial in character and the library is confident it wants all the publications as they appear. Some examples are a numbered or unnumbered series from a publisher that deal with a single subject area. Another broad category is the irregular publications of a professional society, memoirs and special commemorative volumes, for example. The library places the order for the series or items rather like it places a journal subscription. The supplier (vendor or producer) automatically sends the items as they appear along with an invoice. [...] The greatest drawback to standing orders is their unpredictable nature in terms of numbers and cost. Certainly, there is no problem about numbers for the regular series, but their cost per item may vary. When it comes to publishers' series or irregular series, a library may go years without receiving a title, then receive several in one year."
