NGLI 1101: Research in the Digital Age

NGLI 1101, a 1-credit course, is a part of the SHSU Core Curriculum Component IX, of which undergraduate students are required to complete a total of 4 credit hours.

Course Description:

This course provides students with key strategies to efficiently search academic, popular, and professional resources and evaluate their appropriateness within various information need contexts. The lifelong learning skills learned in the course will prepared students to be effective information consumers and producers in academic and real-world scenarios.

Students completing the course will be able to:

  • Outline the characteristics and diversity of information literacy and examine the nuances of the information ecosystem;
  • Demonstrate selection of relevant and credible academic, popular, and professional sources to support a research question and their relative strengths and weaknesses;
  • Develop search strategies and perform efficient navigation of search engines, article databases, and library catalogs for relevant sources;
  • Evaluate the effectiveness and reliability of visual elements as a means of communication; 
  • Summarize, interpret, and analyze sources as part of a bibliography; and 
  • Explore their role as emerging scholars and contributors to the ongoing communication and information creation in their subject or field.
