An advocate of engaging and effective learning, Ashley has continually investigates and applies a variety of instructional strategies, including active learning, in her teaching in the classroom, one on one, in training library staff, and conference presentations.
Ashley began her career in Education as a upper elementary and middle grades Science teacher and maintains Texas Educator Certificates in Grades 4-8 Science, Generalist, and English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL). Inspired to combine her loves of learning, teaching, and information, Ashley became a librarian. In her current role as a Research & Instruction Librarian, Ashley instructs undergraduate and graduate students in information literacy and library research skills, collaborates with faculty to build instructional materials, and investigates and purchases materials to support and enhance instruction and learning activities at SHSU. She is also assisting in planning SHSU's upcoming 2019-2024 Quality Enhancement Plan - Active Learning at SHSU, as a part of a university-wide committee. Ashley recently shared about simple, easy to implement active learning strategies to enhance library instruction in a presentation to academic, public, and school librarians at the 2019 Greater Austin Area Information Literacy Symposium.
Ashley, in collaboration with Heather Adair and Michael Hanson, will be responsible for the Active Learning Center Grant two-year program.
Following over 20 years in the K-12 environment, Heather has brought her instructional and professional development experience to Newton Gresham Library as the Instruction Librarian. Her beliefs are grounded in the need for creating a positive, engaging, relevant experience for all learners, igniting inquiry and supporting critical thinking and problem-solving and inspiring learnings to become lifelong learners. Throughout her experience as an Instructional Coach and professional development presenter, Heather has supported instructors' necessity to become adept at and use of a variety of teaching and assessment strategies to meet learners' varied needs and encouraging a growth mindset in an information-rich global society.
Heather began her career in education as a high school Business Education and Computer Application Career & Technology teacher, bringing over 10 years' industry experience with her, and later extended her experience to include school librarianship, instructional coaching, and administration. She maintains Texas Educator Certificates in Secondary Business Education Composite (grades 6-12), School Librarian (grades EC-12), and Principal (grades EC-12).
In her current role as the Instruction Librarian, Heather coordinates library instruction activities for undergraduate and graduate students in information literacy and library research skills, collaborates with faculty to build instructional materials, and investigates and purchases materials to support and enhance instruction and learning activities at SHSU. In addition to her role on the SHSU Steelcase ALC Grant Team, she also serves on the SHSU Re-imagining the First Year Experience (RFY) Committee, 2019 SHSU Common Reader Committee, and the NGL Social Media Committee.
