National Institutes of Health

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the nation’s medical research agency — making important discoveries that improve health and save lives.

The National Institutes of Health is made up of 27 different components called Institutes and Centers. Each has its own specific research agenda, often focusing on particular diseases or body systems. All but three of these components receive their funding directly from Congress, and administrate their own budgets

Centers for Disease Control
CDC.gov provides users with credible, reliable health information on:

CDC Wonder
Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research -- an easy-to-use, menu-driven system that makes the information resources of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) available to public health professionals and the public at large. It provides access to a wide array of public health information.

National Center for Health Statistics
Provides US public health statistics including diseases, pregnancies, births, aging, and mortality. Public use data files are available for download

World Health Organization
The United Nations public health arm. Monitors disease outbreaks, assesses the performance of health systems around the globe.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration
OSHA is the main federal agency charged with the enforcement of safety and health legislation.

National Health Information Center
A health information referral service. NHIC links people to organizations that provide reliable health information.

National Institute on Aging
Government site with information on research and practical resources for the aging population.

National Library of Medicine
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has been a center of information innovation since its founding in 1836. The world’s largest biomedical library, NLM maintains and makes available a vast print collection, and produces electronic information resources on a wide range of topics that are searched billions of times each year by millions of people around the globe.
