Quick Search

A tutorial on how to use the library's Quick Search to find a variety of different source types from many different databases.

Getting Started

To start searching on Quick Search, all you need to do is go to the library's homepage and enter your search in the search bar. Keep in mind that in order to search and access the results, you must either be on campus wi-fi/computer, or you will be prompted to log in with your SHSU email and password. Otherwise, you will not be able to access the results. For the purpose of this tutorial, we will search the topic "media bias".

The search box of Quick Search (replacing Engine Orange). Find books, articles, films, and MORE in the catalog and selected databases. In the search box is media bias.

Your results will appear once you press "Search." Each result will let you know if the item is available physically (and what its call number is) or if it's available online. Simply click any result for more information and for the link to take you to the item.

Search results of media bias. Only one result is displayed in the screenshot, but the entire webpage is displaying results 1-10 of 74,433 Results and is on Page 1. The only visible result is a book called Media bias by contributor Susan Hunnicutt, published in 2011. It is Available at Newton Gresham Library 3rd Floor (P96 .O242 U654 2011) and Available Online. None of the Tweak your results filters have been selected. The user is prompted to Sign in to get complete results and to request items.

Each item's index will include multiple parts.

The title, author, publishing date, and source type will all appear at the top.

Right below it is a variety of different ways to export the item's citation. It can be exported via Excel, Endnote, Mendely, Bibtex, RIS, as well as email. You can also print the record itself, or save a permalink of the record to access later. If you're ever saving links from the library catalog, it's pertinent that you use the permalink option, as other links may expire and become broken shortly after. Finally, a citation for the record can also be automatically generated; you can get a citation in APA 7th ed., MLA 9th ed., Tuabian/Chicago 8th ed., or Harvard style. Please always check the automatically generated citations for accuracy before using them in your work, as errors can occur.

Below these is the link to take you to the full digital text. Each result will take you to different databases or websites that the result is hosted on, you may have to click several links before you get there.

If it is available physically, you will see your options on acquiring it. If you sign in with your SHSU username and password, you can place a hold for pickup later. Otherwise, you will be told where in the library it is kept and how many copies are available. If it is available to you via Interlibrary Loan, you will see that information here as well.

Finally, below this is more information regarding the subjects/topics of the item, a summary and other publication/citation information, and other library resources similar to it.
