SHSU Common Reader 2024: Callings

Resource Guide for the 2024-2025 SHSU Campus Common Reader selection: Callings: The Purpose and Passion of Work by Dave Isay, with Maya Millett

Discussion Questions

  • What is your major going into college? How did you decide on it? How does it relate to what you want to do? If you're undecided, are there any programs that do call to you? Why or why not?

  • Have you changed your mind about what you want to do with your life? How drastic have these ideas changed? And if you haven't changed your mind, why do you think you've felt so connected to your original vision?

  • Do you feel called to do anything that may end up outside your career/academic goals? Why do you believe this calling cannot be a career? Do you prefer to engage with this calling in a more "hobby" context, or would you rather it be your career?

  • Is there someone in your life who has found their "calling"? What would you ask them about their calling or their process to finding it? Do you see similarities with your own calling/journey?

  • What sorts of remedial, tedious, or otherwise "undesirable" or less thought about callings as described in this book have surprised you? Are there any jobs/hobbies/etc. that you've enjoyed or had interest in that seem unusual to others?

  • The book has stories divided into five sections: Dreamers, Generations, Healers, Philosophers, and Groundbreakers. Which, if any, do you think you might fall under? Why? If none, or if you're not sure, how else might you describe yourself on your current path?

  • Which of the 53 stories moved/inspired you the most? Why? Do you see any similarities with your own path/goals?

  • What are you proudest of in your life?

  • Do you have any regrets?
