The two-year cycle for the Steelcase Active Learning Cycle Grant is best represented in four Phases:
Phase 1 will run through the entirety of the Grant Cycle (i.e., 2 years) and overlapping the other three phases. Phases 2, 3, & 4 will experience minimal overlap as one phase ends and the next begins.
Throughout the Cycle, two instruments will be utilized to measure impact: the Steelcase Learning Environment Evaluation measurement tool and the Teaching Dimensions Observation Protocol (TDOP) tool through the Wisconsin Center for Education Research. Additional means of measurement will include instructional practices as observed by members of the grant team.
Coupled with growing active learning instructional protocols, the grant team intends to collect data from the measurement tools and methods for the purpose of research and publication on active learning in higher education. Dissemination of research methodologies and findings will include presentation at local, regional and national events as well as publication in trade and academic journals at the close of Year 1, mid-year in Year 2, and at the close of the grant cycle at the end of Year 2. Similarly, completion of the annual report will be submitted to Steelcase at the close of each year.
The grant team will, as a whole, work to ensure regular progress and fidelity to the grant implementation is maintained throughout the grant cycle. The Instruction Librarian will coordinate instruction in the ALC; the Head of Technical Services lead on-campus dissemination activities ; the Education Librarian will coordinate administration of pre- and post- faculty survey instruments and catalog the results. With the assistance of the grant team, the Instruction Librarian will develop and lead professional development opportunities for NGL, SHSU and local K-12 faculty and administrators. Collectively, the ALC grant team will work to accomplish all other tasks on the timeline, including submission of IRB requirements, data disaggregation, planning open houses and tours, completing conference proposals, planning presentations, and authorship of dissemination documents.
The Grant Team at NGL will conduct research on instruction in the Active Learning Center and share the findings both locally within the SHSU community and to the broader instructional library and education community through publication in trade and scholarly journals and at teaching and learning events and conferences. Both publication and presentation will include dissemination at the local and campus level as well as with regional/state and national/international audiences. The detailed Dissemination Plan along with a list of potential publications and events are listed here.
To balance the time and attention of the grant time, ensuring appropriate focus remains on implementation of active learning strategies with fidelity, it is the intent of the grant team to present at one regional/state and one national/international event per year in the two year grant cycle. It is likely that, however, in order to secure a presentation invitation, the team will apply to multiple events, which could result in invitations to more than one regional/state and/or national/international event per year. If multiple invitations are received, the grant team will balance the calendar to appropriately balance focus between instruction, research and dissemination without compromising fidelity of implementation or quality of learning.
