A major renovation of the first and second floors of the Newton Gresham Library is underway, starting in May 2020. The first floor will be transformed into open study and collaboration zones. The second floor will be made into a patron-service and research centered floor with a full-service Starbucks. The Academic Success Center will also move into the Library, making NGL the central hub for learning, teaching, research, and collaboration.
This is NGL's most significant renovation project since its opening in 1968. Construction began on May 4 and will continue through the end of 2020, with plans to have everything completed by early the following spring.
Read more about the renovation plan in NGL Executive Director Eric Owen's early March interview in the Houstonian.
Since opening in 1969 the Newton Gresham Library has undergone only minor renovations to address immediate needs and changes to the campus curriculum and culture. The current project serves as a major rethinking of the library and its role on Sam Houston State University’s campus. A key motivation is the consolidation and integration of the University’s Academic Success Center into the library. The combination of the Newton Gresham Library and Academic Success Center demonstrates a key evolutionary trend in University Libraries – moving away from a facility viewed solely as a repository for books and documents, and towards a recognition of the library as a comprehensive academic and scholarly learning center.
